10 Make-Up Trends To Stay Away From This Season

As we scroll through social media, we come across multiple trends and DIYs. With every new day comes a brand-new trend and, along with that, eager Gen-Z and Millennials trying it out in hopes of getting more views or followers on their social media accounts. But just like everything else in life, when it comes to trends, some are good and, others that make you go WTF!! Idiocracy is present everywhere and unfortunately, the beauty and makeup world is not exempt from it. While there’s no denying that viral trends can throw up an interesting hack or two, there are those that deserve to be lost to posterity.

Here’s our list of 10 hair-raising hacks that need to be erased from our minds like a bad memory.

1. Weird Eye Makeup Tutorial:

Ah! What happened to our brains? Permanent marker and coloured pencils as eyeliner, Oreo cookie as mascara, seriously? Agreed Taylor Swift did use permanent marker as eyeliner once in her life, doesn’t mean you should too. No matter how many times she admits it was a stupid move on her part, that didn’t stop people from trying out this weird makeup trend. Next up if coloured eyeliners are too pricey for you, don’t use anything at all. Stealing a kid’s coloured pencils and using them as eyeliner or lipliner isn’t going to help. And some loves are not meant to be together. Example: your love for food and makeup. Mixing Oreo cookie powder with water and rubbing alcohol is a big no-no unless you’re looking to get an eye infection.

2. Shaving off Eyebrows

The evolution of eyebrows has seen everything from the bushiest brows to barely-there arches, but shaving off the entire brow altogether? No can do! Going with this viral trend requires some serious commitment—remember it could take weeks, if not months for the brows to grow back completely. And the older you are, the slower the growth in addition to the risk of razor cuts and inflammation around the sensitive area. So, unless you got the lead role as ‘kancha’ from Agneepath, don’t do it.

3. The Ear Make-Up

Trust us girls when we say, your makeup is not worth to be wasted on this silly trend. The true idea of makeup is to enhance the features you already have, and not to make yourself look like an elf coming out of a fairytale. If you are so adamant about making a statement, you can do so with jewellery and as we both know, there are endless pieces of statement jewellery that will enhance your look much better than some silly makeup trend.

4. Back Neck Contouring

Well, the trend speaks for itself. Why the hell would anyone contour their back neck? Plus it is difficult to perfectly align the makeup in a blind spot no matter how many mirrors you use. Unless you are trying to grab attention by showing the effort you put deliberately on your back neck, we suggest you steer clear of this trend.

5. Rainbow Teeth

Just when we thought the rainbow colours would look pretty on just about anything, this makeup trend came out of nowhere and proved us wrong. Just because it is white, doesn’t mean it needs to be coloured. Unless you want to look like you haven’t brushed your teeth in years, we suggest you ignore this makeup trend completely. More to go with weird makeup looks.

6. Henna Freckles

Fake freckles have been a thing for some time now with freckle ‘pens’ being an easily available makeup tool. However, that didn’t quite cut it for this millennial brigade. The latest fake freckle look involves dotting them on your face with henna. Now this is problematic for several reasons. The henna that is available in the market is usually not FDA-approved and contains dyes and chemicals. It’s a definite no-no for the face as it can cause allergic reactions and sensitivity. Also, remember, the henna will be on your face for a long time, which means so will the reactions, if any!

7. Vampire Skin

Well, hello Edward Cullen fan girl how are you doing? Well fine, I guess unless you are trying out this trend. This involves adding glitter and/or liquid highlighter to achieve that incandescent look of a vampire. We’re on board with glimmering, highlighter skin, but honestly, glitter in your foundation? We think it’s best left for your DIY craft project and not your DIY Makeup project.

8. Lubricant as Primer

Social media influencers will stop at nothing in their quest for glass skin. While we’ve seen beauty-obsessed people trying every permutation and combination to achieve that glossy finish, this made us wash our eyes to forget what we saw. Content creators have been reaching out for lubricant for its gel-like consistency which not only gives the skin a dewy finish but also supposedly makes your makeup last longer. According to dermatologist advice, you should steer clear of lubricants on the face as they’re oil-based and contain ingredients that can clog your pores and cause breakouts. One may argue that these are safe for the face since they’re meant for delicate, private areas, but understand that these products contain heavier oils like castor and almond oil. When layered with other products like moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup, it’s the perfect recipe for disaster one can ask for.

9. Baking Soda as Setting Powder

If you are going for a bakeup instead of makeup, go ahead, this trend is all yours. Let’s leave the right product for the right purpose, baking soda to perfect your cakes and setting powder to perfect your makeup. Baking soda can be harsh on your skin leading to skin irritation, redness, and God knows what not. For once if we can just not combine food and makeup material. That’s just like adding another trend under crazy beauty trends.

10. Fake Eye Bags

Such a massive skincare and makeup industry with products for every concern imaginable—and beauty influencers decide to use them to create fake under-eye bags. People out there are paying a serious amount of money for makeup and professional treatment to get rid of eye bags. The trend was started by TikTok user Sara Carsten to embrace the dark circles that she'd struggled with for a long time which is commendable. The idea was to accentuate and celebrate her natural features, however, beauty influencers seem to have taken it a bit too far by creating glaring dark circles and eye bags. Guess this will fall under the smoky ‘under-eyes’ category.
